Descendant lines for early Hatchell families.

The greatest challenge to Hatchell family research is the establishment of proven links among the various branches of the family listed here , based on our best and most-current knowledge.

It is hoped that this geographic grouping of each branch will aid in locating ancestors, as well as better define relationships among the different branches. Bill Hatchell 2/23/99.

William of Isle of Wight, VA, d. bef 1760, Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

A large number of Southerners bearing the Hatchell surname today are no doubt descendants of William’s three known sons, William, Peter, and Morris.

Morris was the patriarch of the South Carolina and Louisiana branches, with descendants scattered across the South and Southwest today. Many of the descendants of his brothers Peter and William appear to still reside in and around Virginia, although few remain in Isle of Wight County itself.

William of York Co, VA, William of Isle of Wight Co, VA, and William of Carteret Co, NC are all linked across time and the geography of Virginia and the Carolinas; yet, exact relationships among the four groupings have yet to be established. More “combing of the flax” will be necessary to resolve these tangled lines before we can weave a final fabric that can be understood. Bill Hatchell 4/26/99.

William of Mecklenburg, VA.

William of Carteret, NC. The line of William Hatchell and Christiana Morris is largely a mystery to us at this point.

Bill has written a short background piece titled the The William Enigma. to go along with this report, explaining what we know so far. This William is just one of a number early Hatchell men with same first name.

Because the name William was used so frequently in the early families, sorting and identifying the many Williams has turned out to be a difficult proposition, resulting in a problem Bill calls the William Enigma.

Rebecca Hatchell Kusserow and others are still working on this problem and hope to eventually unravel the mystery of the many Williams.
