Ambrose Hatchel (1841-aft 1890) of Tennessee and Kentucky
(see desc. report for Ambrose)

Ambrose Hatchel was born 21 Nov 1841 in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, TN. He married Abigail “Abby” Aikens of TN, and they raised nine known children: three girls and five boys. The girls were Nancy, Sarah, and Minnie. The boys were William, James, Winford, Robert, Albert and Price. Michael (Mike) Hatchel of Harrodsburg, Kentucky is descended from son Winford who married Tish Spalding of Shelby County, and after Tish died, Winford married Mary Jane Spalding, her sister. Children resulted from both Spalding marriages. Winford’s son, Charlie, born to wife Mary Jane in Casey County, KY was Mike’s grandfather. Daughter Sarah married George Price who died, and later married his brother, Thomas Price. No other marriages for Ambrose’s children are known at this time. However, there was a close connected with the Price family based on son Price and his sister Sarah who married Price brothers.

Ambrose enlisted in the Confederate Army on 4 Nov 1861 at Camp Trousdale, TN under command of Lt. Hunt. On the 1860 TN census, Ambrose is shown in Lincoln County, TN. He served as Private, Co. A, 41st Regt., Tenn. Infantry. He was captured three times by the Union forces and was paroled at Greensboro, NC on 1 May 1865 after the Confederate surrender. Thereafter, he returned to Lincoln County, TN but also appeared on the Robertson County, TN census in 1870. Ambrose eventually moved north to Shelby and Mercer Counties, KY. He stated on the various TN census records that he had been born in TN. The only Hatchel in TN at the time of Ambrose’s birth ca 1840 was Archibald Hatchel according to descendant Mike. Archibald may have come from NC, according to Bill’s records.

Mike is working with Bill to try to locate proof in the early records of TN of the relationship between Ambrose and suspect father, Archibald. Mike may be contacted at: Email

“Virginia Ed”

Edward Chambers Hatchell (ca 1855-bef 1927) and Virginia Lee Mallett (ca 1855-1927) of Mecklenburg County, VA

Edward Gordon Hatchell, III of Portsmouth, VA is a living descendant of Edward Chambers Hatchell and wife Virginia Lee Mallett of Mecklenburg County, VA. He and Bill are searching for the ancestral line of Edward Chambers Hatchell who has never been traced. If anyone can help in this quest, please contact Bill (wmflaxcomb@earthlink.net) or Ed (equestrian@worldnet.att.net).

No conclusive evidence has surfaced to date, however, strong circumstantial evidence recently found on the Mecklenburg County census of 1850 has narrowed the search to descendants of perhaps three men living in Mecklenburg at the time of the American Revolution: Edward, Lewis and James Hatchell, also spelled Hatsell in the VA records. Edward (Edy/Eddie) and Lewis Hatchell are mentioned in Revolutionary War records and appear to be related to one another as well as to William Hatchell, Jr. and perhaps one John Hatchell (Hatsell), Revolutionary patriot of Mecklenburg. Edward (Edy) Hatchell witnessed the will of James Holloway of Mecklenburg County in 1778 (Will Book 1, p. 261). The “Auditors’ Account Book”, 27 May 1784, Richmond, Virginia, lists Edward Hatchell (p. 19) for “Pay for militia service in this State, Mecklenburg County.” Edward married Sarah Cox in Mecklenburg County 16 March 1804. He was a taxpayer in Mecklenburg County, Lower District, in 1800 along with Stephen Hatsell. James Hatsell married Mary Martin 1 June 1819 in Mecklenburg County. Edward and James Hatchell were in Mercer County, Kentucky in 1850 (census). Lewis Hatsell appeared on the 1782 tithe list of William Randolf in Mecklenburg County with 8 whites and no slaves shown in his household. Five years later, Lewis Hatsell is listed on the Mecklenburg County Personal Property Tax List A with himself, one female, and no slaves. By 1850, Benjamin Hatchell, age 75 and wife Elizabeth, age 72 appears to be the oldest household among Hatchells in the county. Living with Benjamin is James, Jr., age 22 and wife Susan, age 21. No son named Edward has yet been born. James, Sr., age 55 and wife Mary live next to the Howell Mallett family. Based on this rather circumstantial evidence, it would appear that Edward Chambers Hatchell was perhaps the son of James Hatchell and Mary “Polly” Martin rather than Edward or Lewis.

Edward Chambers Hatchell was born in Mecklenburg County, VA about 1850-55. He married Virginia Lee Mallett who was born in Mecklenburg Count, and died in 1927 in Portsmouth, VA. A cursory look at the Mecklenburg County census for 1850 shows an Edward Chambers and family, as well as the Hatchells, Malletts, and Martins all living in proximity to one another. The 1860 census has yet to be checked, but hopefully, will reveal Edward Chambers Hatchell’s parents. Similarly, no female child named Virginia Lee is listed in the Howell Mallett household in 1850, but again, the 1860 Mecklenburg census may be the key to resolving the riddle of “Virginia Ed.”

Here is the descendant report beginning with Edward Chambers Hatchell and Virginia Mallett:
